The virtual edition of South African Fashion Week (SAFW) Spring/Summer 2021/22 concluded on 1 May, after three days of shows presented by 28 designers. South African actress Bonnie Mbuli called the presentation a different kind of runway show “to meet these unprecedented times.” Celebrities, influencers, and editors gathered at Johannesburg’s Mall of Africa to view the shows, which were streamed on a large screen, while others streamed the shows via the app Quicket.

MC Alpine, a designer from SAFW’s New Talent Search competition presented a Waste Not, Want Not collection, which the designer said includes leftover fabric from previous collections. The designs were in line with what SAFW director, Lucilla Booyzen, says were this season’s main focus, slow fashion.

Day two featured designers like MmusoMaxwell and LVMH finalist Lukhanyo Mdingi who showcased as part of the Diamond Fibre Collections produced with mohair. The season closed with a tribute to Wandi Nzimande, co-founder of popular streetwear and lifestyle brand Loxion Kulca, who died earlier this year. House of Ole founder, Ole Ledimo designed the collection, which was showcased amidst the backdrop of Nzimande’s favourite quote: “There is no day that is so bright that night will never come. There is no night that is so dark that day will never come.”
