Chris Hemsworth on the Sweats, Essential Oils, and Rare Cactus That Make Him Feel at Home

Chris Hemsworth has board shorts and sunscreen on his mind. Not because he’s traveling, but because he’s at home in Australia, where he’s training for his next appearance as Thor. When he’s not getting his Norse god swole on, he’s been staying busy: sharing his sunny surroundings with the world via charmingly goofy meditation videos, helping launch Hugo Boss’ new fragrance, and still reaping the benefits of his wife’s discerning taste.

You might remember that last time we spoke to Hemsworth, he confessed that he’d once slathered his wife’s La Mer cream on a sunburn, blissfully unaware of its exorbitant pricing. Though he’s learned from that mistake, he’s now enjoying the candles and essential oils she burns around the house. “I can’t tell you what they are,” he confesses, “but I like coconut scented things. They take me back to my childhood.”

He’s also enjoying that southern hemisphere summer life right now. Below, he shares a few of his essentials, from workout footwear to post-surf sweats. Maybe they’re useful where you are, too. if nothing else, Hemsworth’s essentials are a reminder that the sun will show up again here, too. Someday.

For Working Out

Vibram Barefoot Shoes

“I’ve been training kind of non-stop. I find it’s the best way to get out of my head. I’m looking at various different styles of training and trying to mix it up and challenge my body in different ways. I like Vibram barefoot shoes, which are really low profile, so it feels like you’re training without shoes. It’s very good for the stability we’re meant to use. It’s better for your back, too.”

For Paddling Out

Bondi 17″ Volley Boardshorts

Quicksilver “Cosmic Vibrations” Board Shorts

“It’s pretty hot here, so I usually work out in a pair of board shorts and a T-shirt. If I’m doing a lot of cardio I’ll layer up and put a hoodie on and a pair of track pants to up the intensity and sweat a lot more. Surf brands like Ripcurl or Quicksilver have great elasticity and stretch to them, and they’ve got quick-dry material.”

For Aprés-Surf (Or Just Channel-Surfing)

American Vintage Joggers

American Vintage

American Vintage Retburg Hoodie

American Vintage

Bassike Founded T-Shirt

“I like soft, organic cottons and loose, comfort-fitting outfits. American Vintage and Bassike make some great stuff.”

For Errand-Running

John Varvatos Amsterdam Apron Boot

John Varvatos

“John Varvatos boots have a bit of a worn texture to them—nothing too structured.”

For Smelling Good

Paw Paw Cream

Dr. Pawpaw

“I like scents that take me back to my childhood—sunscreen or surfboard wax or paw paw cream. I love the smell of eucalyptus and gum trees. In summertime when it’s heating up, it’s so vibrant and there’s so much life and energy to it, the smell of the Australian bush and eucalyptus leaves crackling in the sun. The smell right before it rains gives me huge comfort. When I step off an airplane from somewhere overseas and those scents hit me, I’m immediately grounded.”

Hugo Boss Boss Bottled Eau de Parfum spray

“I think dressing up nice, cologne, it’s more for yourself than it is for somebody else. If you wear it when you go out and it makes you feel good about yourself, fantastic. If you wear at it at home and it makes you feel good about yourself, then great.”

Madagascar Palm

“Home is less about the bits and pieces as much as it is being in Australia and being able to see and smell the ocean close by. We have very thick rainforest and bushland around us. We also have a Madagascar cactus in our lounge room, which I love. It’s quite foreign to me and the world I grew up in. It reminds me of dusty roads.”
